here's my tip, Do what all metalheads dicovered way before darkstep even exsisted, you start off making your basic reese. (either detuning oscilators or PWM). when you get to distortion, add an EQ after (not before or it won't work) and scoop out the mids, raise the lows and the sparking highs.
I'd like to know how other people do theirs? I use a dicotinued VSTi called reFX JunoX2. then just re-sample noises i've made within Renoise.

Ive been making my music with the sytrus fm synth in fruity loops for a while now, and ive finally got it to sound pretty good.
It makes some nice phasey growling dog bass and it suits dark step pretty good and some screaming teradactyl sounds that are good for gabber.
The chorus is really good (just output the speaking oscillators into FX instead of flat output - its that simple) I only just worked that out the other day slapping myself on the forehead.
Also, if you use the harmonic chart, (its called OSC in the tabs) include a high component in the primary oscillator before you add the effecting operator and this will help "crisp" the sound.
You can include higher components (other than the fundamental) in all your effecting operators, I tend to use a chain of 2, one effecting another effector, and that effecting the carrier.
Then as long as youve got chorus on to help smooth the sound out, got the crisping harmonic on the carrier, then its just a matter of searching for the sound you want.
Sytrus also makes some good gabber drums, the main trick in making a bassdrum is you put a tight falling pitch envelope on the carrier, then you can adjust the wave or add distortion, then do whatever you want to it and youll get a nice live modifyable gabber drum with it.
All I can say is, Sytrus works, so just believe in it and be patient and youll get some nice pro sounds out of it.
